The National Fraud Authority

About the National Fraud Authority:

The National Fraud Authority (NFA) was established on 1 October. An Executive Agency of the Attorney General's Office, we will coordinate activity across the whole economy, private and public sectors, to make the UK a hostile environment for fraudsters.

The proceeds of fraud are often used to fund larger more serious crimes, such as people and drug trafficking.
Established following the Government's Response to the Fraud Review in 2007 (LINK), the Authority is aiming to initiate, co-ordinate and communicate on counter-fraud activity across the private and public sectors.

In this way, we are aiming to maximise opportunity and effort, reduce overlaps and close gaps to place the balance of risk back onto the fraudster.

The 2006 Fraud Review recommended the setting up of the National Fraud Strategic Authority as a non-statutory organisation, working with private and public sector bodies to look at ways of understanding fraudsters' activity, their methodologies and their victims.

We are working across the UK economy to look at ways of moving the fight against fraud further up the agenda by operating across a wide range of partners to create a more rigorous action-led, and enforcement supported, approach to tackling this crime.

Fraud - including scams, online theft, insurance cheats and tax fraud - costs the UK £30bn a year, according to an official estimate.  The National Fraud Authority (NFA) has calculated the figure for the first time and it equated to £621 per adult in the UK.  Website>> National Fraud Authority

How to Report a Fraud

New Fraud Reporting Centre opens.

The National Fraud Authority (NFA), the Government's strategic lead organisation on counter-fraud activity, has recently established Action Fraud. As the UK's first national centre for reporting fraud, Action Fraud provides a single point of contact where victims can both report fraud and seek advice.

NFA CEO Dr Bernard Herdan said: "Fraud is rife across the UK and costs us all dearly. Recent research revealed businesses are frustrated by the lack of a central reporting facility and our new Action Fraud service is a direct response to this need. It is now much easier for any fraud victim to report the crime and gain the support they need."

Working in partnership with the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB), Action Fraud takes victim reports of fraud and provides the NFIB with information which is analysed and used to build intelligence on fraud, ultimately providing law enforcement and counter-fraud agencies with more reliable information to better target fraudsters, protect the public and bring criminals to justice.
