On Friday 3rd May, the NEBRC was subject to a cyber incident.
A NEBRC email account was compromised, and a phishing email purporting to be from the NEBRC was sent to some contacts. The compromise was quickly identified and mitigation put in place disabling the account and preventing any further access. NEBRC immediately instigated their incident response plan.
The contacts who were sent the email have been informed and the incident was reported to Action Fraud, and the Information Commissioner’s Office.
NEBRC are working with a trusted cyber security partner and police to determine how the incident happened.
NEBRC CEO Rebecca Chapman said “Unfortunately, SMEs are regularly targeted by cyber criminals, and the NEBRC is no different. What this incident demonstrates is how important it is for businesses to have an incident response plan in place to quickly mitigate the risks and take steps to prevent any further compromise. Everyone in a business needs to know what to do if a cyber incident happens. We are fortunate to have access to a range of expertise via our trusted partners, as do all of our members.”
“As an organisation we understand the impact such cyber attacks can have, and as such we are here to support SMEs in assessing and improving their defences and response plans, should they also be targeted by cyber criminals.”
“Thank you to all our members and stakeholders for their continued support.”
